Mustard is a one of the major oil seed crops in our country. It is under cruciferae family and scientific name is Brassica campestris. Mustard seed contains 40-50% oil and 20-25% protein. Three cultivated mustard species are B. campestries, B. juncea and B. napus. Sowing time of mustard is robi season(middle of October to end of November). In our agronomy field mustard plant was grown in last winter by some students as their practical job. At that picture the plants are in flowering stage.

Soybean plants with pods in BSMRAU agronomy field
Soybean is the most popular edible oil in our country. We have to import soybean oil from foreign countries. Our farmers are not interested to cultivate soybean because they have no facilities to extract oil from soybean. Soybean is under leguminosae family and the scientific name is Glycine max. It contains 40-45% high quality protein and 20-22% oil in its seed. The growing season of soybean is robi. In BSMRAU different experiments are done for cultivating soybean in kharif season.

Sesame plants in BSMRAU
Sesame is an important oilseed crop in Bangladesh. It is commonly known as til. Sesame seed contains 38-54% oil and 18-20% protein. It is under pedaliaceae and scientific name is Sesamum indicum. It is
grown both in Kharif I &II season. Sesame plant in the picture was grown in Kharif-I season in BSMRAU. The plants are in flowering stage.

Sunflower is commonly known as shudjomukhi in Bangladesh. It is an important oil seed crop of the
world. It is also grown as ornamental plants. It is under compositae family and scientific name is Helienthus annus. Sunflower seed contains 40-45% oil which is used both as edible and industrial oil. Sunflower oil is consider as most suitable for human consumption due to presence of high level of linoleic acid and absence of linolenic acid. For this reason its oil is good for the people having heart disease. Growing season of sunflower is robi and kharif-2.
